The Sisters of Mercy

The Mater Hospital is owned by the Sisters of Mercy, which is a congregation of religious women dedicated to the service of people in need.

The Order was founded in 1831 by Catherine McAuley and since then has spread from Dublin to become one of the largest religious orders of women in the world.

The Sisters continue to care for the sick, the poor, and the abandoned while supporting educational and medical facilities.

Catherine’s care was marked by her spirit of joy, serenity and good humour, and patients will find that this tradition of care has been lovingly adopted by the staff of the Mater Hospital.
