Deb Wright

Deb Wright, who originates from New Zealand, was only going to work at the Mater Gladstone for 3 months, but 4 years later she is still happily working as a Midwife and managing the maternity services of the Hospital. Deb describes what working at Mater Gladstone is like:

“Being a Midwife is a great experience, it is wonderful to be a part of the whole life event that comes with the opportunity of working with birthing women and their families. The service offers two private Obstetricians and one GP Obstetrician working collaboratively with midwives and other members of the multi-disciplinary team to provide individualised care.

The Mater welcomes and supports diversity and strives for a positive professional culture that is based on Best Evidence Practice. The mission statement of the Mater is ‘caring for you for Life’ and this applies not only to those who access our services but also to our staff. The Mater Gladstone provides a supportive, family-flexible working environment.

Living in Gladstone on the Central Queensland Coast ensures access to a great variety of activities. Midwives and nurses on their days off spend them at the Islands fishing or snorkelling or they can go into the bush. There is a variety of choice in Gladstone”.

“It’s hard to put into worlds... You need to come and experience it”

Looking for a change in career and lifestyle?

Seven years ago I moved from a cold and wet town called Newcastle upon Tyne UK, to sunny Queensland, Australia. Living is affordable, lifestyle relaxed and climate fantastic. My young children settled very quickly into Australian life and taking them back to the UK this year, they realised what a beautiful safe country there growing up in. We live on The Capricorn coast and its like a slice of paradise.

Working in Australia`s private sector is extremely rewarding and professionally fulfilling. The Mater Hospital recognises the importance of employees having a lifestyle that incorporates balancing work, family, leisure and community involvement. They are certainly committed to assisting employees by providing a work environment which encourages a balanced work/ lifestyle through initiatives such as flexible working arrangements. Both professionally and personally I have no regrets moving my family to Central Queensland.

From the beginning, from initial interview stage to arriving in Australia, from visa assistance to practice mentorship on the ward. The Mater Hospital Rockhampton has been extremely helpful.

The Mater Hospital Rockhampton has provided practical assistance including arranging accommodation and rent support for the initial two months. They could not have been more supportive in helping me with my move from the United Kingdom.

The grounding philosophy of Mercy Health and Aged Care provided a supportive nurturing environment, which respected my experience while assisting with the transition to a new place of work.

The ward staff at the Mater Hospital Rockhampton provided a welcoming supportive network. They provided not just professional support but ensured that I felt part of their team from the outset.

I would strongly encourage people to consider a move to Australia. It has been a very positive move for my family and me. The philosophy of Mercy Health and Aged Care provides a working environment which encourages a therapeutic interpersonal relationship with patients and colleagues.

Outside of the work place, Queensland offers outstanding opportunities to pursue most interests. The climate and lifestyle is second to none. Whether coming with a family, as a couple, or alone, you cannot fail to be impressed with the friendliness of the people, the opportunities to have an excellent work and social life, the outdoor lifestyle, accommodation and country as a whole.
